All Star Supplements

We have tested more than a few supplements that were supposed to provide the most health benefits, including muscletech supplements, prohormone supplements, sports nutrition supplements and even considered ephedra diet pills.

We also asked the expert opinion and together we named the winners of all star supplements contest:

Fish Oil

“It’s a superstar, especially when it comes to heart health,” says Dr. Kevin Barrows, M.D., interim director of clinical programs at the University of California in San Francisco Osher Center for Integrative Medicine. Fish oil has much cumulative research showing it works just as well as cardiac medicines.

Take 1-3 g a day to get cardiac benefits, says Dr. Barrows when sharing the heart health recipe with our readership. Fish oil may also reduce the risk of depression and help kids with ADHD.

St. John’s Wort

More than 20 clinical trials show that this herbal remedy treats mild to moderate depression. For some it works as well as prescription medications, says Dr. Barrows.

The typical dosage is 300 mg 3 times a day, says Gail Mahady, Ph.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She recommends talking to your doctor before taking this herbal supplement, and adds that for severe depression it is better to stick to regular meds.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is also one of the all star supplement contest winners. It is essential for bone health and may be crucial for cancer prevention. Vitamin D can also protect against multiple sclerosis and possibly even flu.

“Many women have vitamin D levels that are too low,” says Dr. Low Dog. Have your doctor do a blood test to measure yours. If you are below 32, take a supplement. Up to 2,000 IUs per day is considered safe for most people. That is also the level cancer researchers are recommending for protective effects
