ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula station of the United States Coast Guard responded to a call for a potential stroke victim on a boat nine and a half miles out on Lake Erie on Sunday.
Coast Guard Bosun’s Mate 2nd Class Chad Carlson said the station received a call from the operator of a boat 9.5 miles northwest of Ashtabula Harbor at about 1:40 p.m.
“He was inbound towards the Ashtabula public docks and asked for assistance because he thought his passenger was having a stroke,” he said. “We dispatched a 34-ft. pursuit boat and called Community Care for assistance at the dock.”
By the time the Coast Guard boat arrived at the boat carrying the possible stroke victim, identified as Allen Ballman, 59, it was already near the harbor, so they escorted it to the dock where Community Care was waiting to take him to Ashtabula County Medical Center.
“In cases of stroke, time lost is brain lost, so rather than transfer him to our boat and then transfer him to the ambulance again, we let Community Care offload the victim where they were waiting for him,” Carlson said.
Coast Guard sources said Ballman was complaining of pain in his right arm and his face showed possible signs of stroke.
Coast Guard sources said the incident is under investigation and no further details will be released until the investigation is completed.
