In young children especially, foreign objects can be stuck up their noses, inserted in their ears, and swallowed. Objects carried by the wind can settle in the eye of a person of any age, all of these foreign objects can have an adverse effect on the body.
Foreign objects which affect the body can range from dust particles in the eye to buttons and coins swallowed by young children who will try to swallow almost anything at an early age. All of which can have untold effects and lead to a variety of disease. Let’s look at a few of the effects of foreign objects on the body.
Eyes. If a foreign object enters the eye it will cause the eye to become bloodshot and itchy. This condition will become aggravated by our natural tendency to scratch the eye also. Much more serious conditions can be caused by sharp objects entering the eye which can result in swelling, bleeding of the eye’s blood vessels, and loss of vision.
Nose and Ears. Young children will often insert a bead, popcorn or any similar small round object into their ear or nose. The symptoms of objects stuck in such orifices can show as deafness in the child or bleeding from the nostril of the child if the object has become stuck.
Stomach. Apart from the obvious objects which can stick in the throat of any person, such as fish bones in adults, young children will try to eat anything. Some items recovered from the stomachs of young children include keys, rings, ball bearings, and screw nails. There are many objects which will pass directly through the digestive system and be passed out in the feces.Other objects need to be located by X-ray and removed surgically.
