Diseases Caused by Excess TV Watching

Selective TV watching can be an informative and enjoyable habit for anyone, but it is not recommended to stay glued to the screen for endless hours each day.

For any adult to become a TV ‘couch potato’ can have adverse effects on the health of the person. It is not so much the watching of the actual TV programs which is harmful, (although some of them can be bad enough!), but the side effects of continual wear on the eyes which could lead to eye diseases. Further the person will suffer from a complete lack of exercise which along with the consumption of a ‘TV diet’ would increase the risk of heart disease.

Consideration should also be given to the effects on young children. Babies are very sensitive to sound and movement and normally will respond to the voice of their mother. For a young baby staring at the screen he or she can become confused at the mechanical sound which could possibly be the start of autistic episodes.

To avoid the chance of any disease occurring in the young as a result of being exposed to too much television the following advice is offered –

Avoid allowing the youngster to continually stare at the screen; the persistent flashing of the screen strobe can lead to diseases such as Strabisumu amd Esoptropia.

The continual watching of the TV will expose the young one to the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation.

The rapid speech delivered from the TV sound will confuse the young child and can lead to problems with attention which may lead to onset of autism.

By being continually absorbed by TV programs, and since watching is a passive activity the child’s brain will not develop correctly. The child may not develop the necessary abilities to interact dynamically with others, and tend to become a little reclusive in later life not have the ability to think independently.
